The Neamţ Fortress

About 40 km from Piatra Neamţ, you can find one of the oldest medieval fortresses in Romania, the Neamţ Fortress. It is located in Târgu Neamţ and it is an attraction for those who want to find out information on the history of Moldova. The Neamţ Fortress was built at the end of the 14th century and was fortified during the reign of Ştefan cel Mare, being a defence point of the Moldavian medieval state. Recently restored, the stronghold tells about the hundreds of years’ history and reveals, with every step, the charm of a world marked by significant events. Tourists can admire the fortress’ halls, the kitchen, the bedrooms, the mint or the dungeons. In addition, they have a panoramic view of the small city.




The Monasteries in the
Neamţ County

The Neamt County is known for its large number of monasteries built in the 15th century. Among them, the Neamţ Monastery, located in the commune of Vânători-Neamţ, is the oldest monastic settlement in the Moldavian region. On the other hand, the beauty of the church services and the painted frescoes attract lots of visitors to the Agapia Monastery, one of the largest in Romania, and the perfect place for those who want to rediscover tranquillity. One should also include the monasteries of Văratec, Sihla, Secu, and Sihastria. The “Dragoş Vodă”
Bison Reservation

The “Dragoş Vodă” Carpathian Bison and Fauna Reservation, located in the Vânători Neamţ National Park, is one of the largest and most important reservations in Europe. Here, visitors can admire not only aurochs [Bison bonasus], but also foxes, wolves, deer and various bird species. The point of attraction is the 15-20 m and 200 m long footbridge built in the forest, from where the animals living in the reservation can be viewed. The bison are also roaming freely in the forests of the Neamţ County and Romania has become the fourth European country where they live in the wild.




The Bicaz Gorge

One of the most spectacular natural landscapes in Romania, the Bicaz Gorge is a connecting corridor between Neamţ and Harghita counties. The serpentine road is truly impressive and culminates with a scenic panoramic view. Along the route you can admire the Piatra Altarului [Altar Stone], a 1120 m high rocky massif, Piatra Pinteştilor (847 m) and Piatra Arşitei (835 m), formations that complete the landscape and give its unique character.




The Cucuteni Eneolithic
Art Museum

Cucuteni is one of the most important European prehistoric civilizations. This civilization is said to be even older than Ancient Egypt and Sumer and has remained known in history due to the art of pottery processing and modelling. The Cucuteni population showed excellent craftsmanship in the painting of ceramics and garment and construction decoration. The museum in Piatra Neamt also exhibits old ceramic objects and you can find out more about the life of the Cucuteni culture and the techniques used.

The Bălţăteşti Balneophysiotherapy and
Recovery Resort

The Ceahlău Massif

Mountain hikers will find a lot of leisure activities in the Neamţ County. There are a number of mountain trails in the Ceahlău Massif, for both amateurs and experienced hikers. The trails are well cared for and lead to Toaca (1,900 m) and Ocolasul Mare (1,907 m) peaks, Duruitoarea Waterfall, Fântânele Chalet and Dochia Chalet. You can also visit the Monastery located on Ceahlău Mountain, built in 1993 at an altitude of 1,770 m. During the cold season, you can practice winter sports with varying degrees of difficulty, on slopes specially designed for beginners and advanced, in the Durău resort.

The Princely Court

The Old Centre in Piatra Neamţ, or the Princely Court, represents an architectural complex, comprising the “St. John the Baptist”, the Tower of Stefan cel Mare and the Princely Court Museum. The Court was founded by Stefan cel Mare between 1468 and 1475, with the role of residence in the exercise of the prince’s prerogatives. Although the construction has undergone changes over the years, today tourists can admire some of the old princely cellars and also the architectural style of the church, the contrast between the simplicity of walls and the vibrant colours.
